It took about 4 days to drive up to Alaska this trip. My Mother was able to drive up as an alternate driver and I am very grateful she went along!

We spent the first day driving to her sisters house in Abbotsford. Day two was spent driving from Abbotsford B.C. to Fort Nelson – a total of 18 hours! My Mother did very well this day and I’m proud of the fact that she and I managed to complete this trip without tearing each others heads off
Actually it was very enjoyable. We did try to stop at Buckinghorse, 100 miles south of Fort Nelson, but there was no room at the hotel. It had begun snowing a few hours earlier and going over Pink mountain was a challenge. Since there was no room, we continued on an while it wasn’t dangerous, it was a challenge and I was very tired. Praise God we stayed safe.
That ‘second’ day was beautiful except for the snow storm. We saw a lot of deer. However, it was our ‘third’ day that we saw a lot of animals – and a variety! Bison, Sheep, Caribou, Moose, and Swans to name a few. We also took our time leaving at 9am in the morning and getting into Whitehorse around 9pm.
It was our last day of travel on Friday where we both had a serious case of “TB” – “Tired But”
On top of that, we had been traveling for a while and I was ready to stop moving. Very few animals were spotted on this day, but I was glad that I was on familiar territory. We arrived in North Pole around dinner and decided to stop at the Pagoda restaurant – the best Chinese food in Alaska. Finally we arrived at Bonnie’s place where I’ll be staying this summer. I praise God for good friends who let me stay with them for a few months at a time.
Mother flew out Saturday night after a day of ‘rest’. Thank you Mom for a great trip – and for being able to use the car this summer! It has already been borrowed by another friend for a few hours. God is good.

- A deer looking both ways before he/she crossed the road.
- One of the few herds that we saw our second day.
- Our Third day of travel, but the best time to take the photo of our road conditions.
- I’ve never seen the sheep on the road like this so I was suprised. Great photo op.
- Our Third day we saw a lot of bison.
- More Bison
- Young Bison
- Photo Op at the Yukon River.
- We saw a few caribou, but most of the time they ran into the forest so fast I didn’t have time to take a photo!
- The side the caribou showed the most!
- Well, I tried :)
- At the Yykon River I heard what I thought were Canadian Geese. It wasn’t; it was about 10-15 swans
- The swans were incredibly beautiful. It surprised me to see them on ice.
- They appeared to be eating as much as they could!
- Their true beauty and size became evident as they took off in flight.
- Mother didn’t want too many photos, but after the beautiful swans I couldn’t resist taking this one.
- The Yukon River is still iced over in this photo of the Whitehorse Sign.
- We didn’t see many animals on our way from Whitehorse to Fairbanks, but these horses were a surprise. I was hoping to see elk…
- I was impressed to see construction crews working on the pilings for a new bridge around Kluane Lake. I suppose it is safest to do in the winter – no water.
- It took all my telephoto power to bring these caribou in as they were walking across a lake in Alaska.
- I used my computer to crop the extra pixels out of this photo. It is not enhanced otherwise.
- Just as we were driving by, the planes put on a show.
- We met these two friends in Fort Nelson going the same direction. Playing leap frog all day, it was nice to travel “with them” – our sisters in Christ.
